Event layout for screenings of Making Waves, Saving Lives
Screenings of Making Waves, Saving Lives are completely volunteer run and all equipment and prizes are by donation as much as possible.
Screening order is as follows (this is an example and suggestion – not requirement):
1st: Basic introduction and thank you’s
2nd: Poetry, vocalists, musician, any art forms about the issue of violence against women, mostly rape. This is to evoke emotion on the topic out of the audience (this is especially helpful to conceptualize the issue to those who have not directly or indirectly faced it and are less compassionate in regards to the issue)
3rd: Master of Ceremony to read the letter from the founders (this humanizes them and holds legitimacy to the fact that this fundraiser is in fact for their benefit)
4th: The documentary (23 min long)
5th: Donation pitch by filmmaker (here the filmmaker calls for everyone to donate extra (pre-written speech) and we pass out donation cards and pens to every person in the audience and typically offer 2 extra raffle tickets for filled out cards that are passed back)
6th: Raffle/auction/other interactive fundraising option
7th: Filmmaker recites speech about the greater issue of violence against women and the need to change society so that we no longer have rape in our society rather than continue relying on reactionary methods that either lower rape instances or help survivors cope.
8th: Music/outro band
Remember, this is a fundraiser! Our number one goal is to raise money for the organization in Kenya. This being said, it is important to keep your eye on the goal. If something costs money, but the return is minimal, you should consider alternative choices. Also, we have run these events with completely volunteer staff and talent thus far and to pay someone at this point would be unfair to those who have volunteered and donated their time before.
This is a grassroots movement. Please help us keep it grassroots by keeping it cheap, easy, accessible, and honest. We want to raise money but we would also like our audience to learn about violence against women and leave wanting society to change into a safer place for all women.
Please call Golzar if you have any questions regarding the example layout or other questions regarding the documentary and the event – 347.546.4238.
Thank you for your interest and commitment!
